A traditional BDC motor controller circuit is an H-bridge. This is an electronic circuit with four open/close switches that supply positive and negative voltage by turns.

The speed can be controlled by varying the number of turns in the field winding. This is achieved by tapping out the series field winding at several points, as shown in the figure below.

I bent their leads on the other side so that they stay in position when I flip the board for soldering. As for the bigger components I used a masking tape to hold them in place when flipping the board.
